A jury found a man guilty in the carjacking death of a Tulsa Public Schools employee Thursday.

Jurors took about five hours to convict 19-year-old Brandon Maxwell.

The judge will sentence Maxwell later this month, but jurors recommended he serve 53 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Maxwell ran over Avonna Olson when she tried to stop him and another teen from stealing her van in March 2012.

Investigators said Brandon Maxwell was driving the van. His attorney said he wanted to waive his right to a preliminary hearing to spare Avonna Olson's family.

The other suspect, Destin Rodriguez, goes on trial May 6, 2013.
