The company released a statement about 9:30 a.m., which said the explosion happened after "a small propane tank was inadvertently processed."
"Just before midnight on February 27th, during normal processing of shreddable scrap material, a small propane tank was inadvertently processed. The mill is designed to withstand these types of events and is equipped with a fire suppression system. All employees are safe and no equipment was damaged. Normal operations have continued since the event occurred. CMC Recycling is dedicated to processing metals in a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly manner. We will review our procedures for screening incoming material and are committed to mitigating these types of incidents in the future."
