Juniors Aimee Creger and Haley Henshaw were named Conference USA Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, respectively, after leading Tulsa to a 4-1 record and the championship of the Unconquered Invitational last weekend.
Creger compiled a 0.93 ERA and a 2-0 record in two complete games, leading the Golden Hurricane to a pair of wins over No. 25/21 Florida State. Henshaw hit .400 (6-for-15) and drove in seven runs with a pair of home runs in the tournament.
A native of Yukon, Okla., Creger struck out 24 batters against five walks, and allowed just seven hits and two earned runs in 15.0 innings. On Friday against Florida State, she had a no-hitter through seven innings of scoreless softball, and finished with 13 strikeouts and two walks. She only allowed two runs on three hits in the eighth inning after Tulsa had taken a 3-0 lead, but buckled down to strike out the final two batters and seal the win. Sunday, Creger punched out 11 batters, allowing no earned runs on four hits and three walks. After FSU scored its run in the second inning, Creger scattered three Seminole hits over the final five innings, allowed just four baserunners, and recorded 10 of her 11 strikeouts in that span.
Henshaw, who hails from Catoosa, Okla., did most of her damage in the biggest games, as she tallied five hits, all seven RBI and both home runs in the three games against No. 25/21 Florida State and No. 21/25 Hofstra. In the tournament opener on Friday against Florida State, Henshaw hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and lead the Golden Hurricane to a 3-2 win. In the following game against Hofstra, she went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. In the finals against Florida State on Sunday, she launched a two-run home run as part of a three-run first inning that led the Hurricane to the 4-1 win.
This is Henshaw's first weekly award, and the second straight and fifth overall C-USA weekly pitcher award of Creger's career.
The Golden Hurricane travels to Austin, Texas, this weekend, Feb. 22-24, for the Texas Invitational. TU opens the tournament at 1:30 p.m. Friday against Utah State, and plays the host Longhorns at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
