Kelsee Grovey and Taleya Mayberry both netted double-digit points and Tiffani Couisnard pulled down double-figure rebounds to lead Tulsa to a 59-55 win over Houston on Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, Texas.
"Tiffani is really a beast on the boards," head coach Matilda Mossman said. "When she goes up to get it, people don't take it away from her. She gets it strong and brings it down, and she kept a lot of possessions alive for us. I think the difference in the game was that we had back-to-back possessions where we got transition buckets around the three-minute mark that broke the game open for us."
Grovey scored 16 points, including four 3-point baskets, while Mayberry tallied 11 points to lead the Hurricane attack. Couisnard recorded 15 rebounds, was one-point shy of a double-double with nine, and added four assists, two steals and a block.
The Hurricane had a 42-33 lead in rebounds, a 13-10 advantage in assists and a 12-8 lead in steals, while the Cougars had a narrow 3-2 advantage in blocks and had just 16 turnovers to TU's 19.
TU shot 38 percent from the field and 46 percent from three-point range.
Tulsa jumped out to a seven-point lead twice in the first half, including a 13-6 mark and a 15-8 lead, but the Hurricane was held without a field goal for 7:19 off the clock when Turner scored a layup to give TU an 18-17 lead with 4:16 left to play. The Cougars outscored Tulsa, 11-8, to end the half with a 28-26 advantage.
TU had a better shooting percentage in the first frame, as the Hurricane shot 40-percent from the field, 42-percent from behind the arc and 33-percent from the charity stripe, and Houston was 37-percent from the field, 38-percent from three-point range and 25-percent from the free throw line.
In the second half, there were three more lead changes and two tied scores, but TU outscored UH, 33-27, for the win.
Houston was led by Porsche Landry with 23 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Yasmeen Thompson also registered nine boards and three steals, and posted two blocks, and Alecia Smith had three assists.
UH finished with a 38 percent field goal shooting percentage.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday against Rice. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
