A motorcyclist died after crashing his bike into a utilities truck on Peoria Avenue in Tulsa Saturday night. Police say it happened at about 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 41st and Peoria.
He has been identified as 43-year-old John Akin.
Akin was northbound on Peoria when an electric truck pulled out of the Kum & Go on the east side of Peoria, according to Sergeant Rex Mann of the Tulsa Police Department. The motorcyclist laid his chopper down trying to avoid the truck, but skidded down the road and hit the back end of the driver's side.
Mann said they believe Akin had the green light. Investigators were working to determine his speed.
Jamie Douglas, a cashier at the Kum & Go, said she had just arrived for work when she heard the crash.
"We heard the crash and then we came outside and seen there was a body on the ground," she said.
"There was a honk and then there was, a scream almost - a screeching of tires or something."
The driver of the truck was taken downtown for an interview and blood test, standard proceedings in a fatality wreck, Mann said. News On 6 confirmed Sunday morning that the driver was not arrested.
Akin was taken to a Tulsa hospital where he died. Mann said he wasn't sure if the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
