An area church on Sunday celebrated the birthday of its oldest member and one of the last known survivors of the Tulsa Race Riot.

Lucille Figures turned 104 this month.

The worship service was shorter than usual so members could gather downstairs to celebrate the lives Figures has touched over the last century.

"It's almost like... she's a shinning light to everybody that she talks to," grandson Craig Figures said.

That shinning light has seen a lot in 104 years, including some dark times.

Lucille Figures survived the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot.

"Her and her mom were running down the street, and she recalls dirt just bouncing around her feet," grandson Homer Dixon said. "I know that the dirt flying around her feet were from shots being fired at her and her mother."

Family said Lucille Figures never dwelled on that day.

"It's just a matter of getting through it and moving on. That's the way she is," Craig Figures said.
