The Jay Public School Board has suspended its middle school principal without pay until the conclusion of his criminal case in Delaware County court.

Shane Carroll is charged with first degree manslaughter stemming from a fatal crash on Grand Lake near Duck Creek in July of 2012.

Authorities say Carroll was behind the wheel of a boat that struck a breakwater on the lake. Monte Price died in that crash.

During a due process hearing Wednesday, the school board said if Carroll is found guilty he would tender his resignation. If found innocent of the charge, the board said Carroll would be required to testify before the board about the incident.

Shane Carroll, who has maintained he is innocent, has a preliminary hearing on the charge Thursday.

Carroll did not make any comments at Wednesday's board meeting.
