A convicted felon is behind bars Saturday after witnesses traveling on U.S. Highway 75 said he rammed another car from behind several times, causing it to flip before fleeing the scene.

An arrest report says the victim told police that Elrico Ali Ackerson, 34, was southbound on U.S. 75 in a white Dodge Magnum about 9:30 p.m. Friday, when he intentionally collided with her "very hard six or seven times." She said she switched lanes to avoid Ackerson, but he also switched lanes to ram her vehicle again, causing her to leave the roadway and flip several times.

Independent witnesses remained at the scene and identified Ackerson's vehicle to police. Another witness followed the Dodge and found it on the roadway's shoulder with heavy front-end damage, the report said.

Police found four people walking along the highway, who admitted they were passengers in Ackerson's vehicle at the time of the hit-and-run, according to the report.

The passengers told police Ackerson was "high on formaldehyde" and he began acting "crazy," driving all over the road and ramming the rear-end of the victim's vehicle. They told police Ackerson left the scene of the collision, pulled over to let them out of the car and drove off before officers arrived, the report says.

On a tip from the passengers, Ackerson and his damaged car were located at an apartment complex in the 700 block of 101st East Avenue.

Officers arrested Ackerson for assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run. He also had outstanding warrants.

In 2009, Ackerson served one year of a three-year sentence for a grand larceny conviction. He also has a previous misdemeanor embezzlement conviction.

He is being held at the Tulsa County jail in lieu of $31,618.50 bond.
