A Coweta man is dead after a high speed wreck in Rogers County late Friday. Troopers say James R. Sawyer was a passenger in a car that ran off the road and crashed after swerving to avoid a deer.

The driver, 48-year-old David W. Hetherington of Broken Arrow, survived the wreck.

Hetherington was westbound on Admiral just east of 225th East Avenue at about 9 p.m., according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He was driving a 2012 Chevrolet sedan at a high rate of speed when it ran off the road to the right. The car flipped end over end several times before coming to rest on its wheels, the collision report states.

Hetherington told officers he swerved trying to avoid hitting a deer.

Sawyer, also 48, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hetherington was taken to a Tulsa hospital where he is said to be stable.

Both men were wearing safety belts, according to the trooper's report.
