Kyle Cumings and Cristian Mata each scored a goal for Tulsa's 30th-ranked men's soccer team to earn a 2-1 win over UAB on Tuesday night. TU moved to 9-4-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in Conference USA, while the Blazers fell to 7-5-2 overall and 2-3 in the league.
"I thought we started the night very well," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "We connected quite well and had a great combination to get the first goal. It was a great job by both of those guys. Cristian also scored his goal exceptionally well. UAB created some good chances so it was a back-and-forth game. Mark Pais played very well in goal, and the back line did a good job. We need to get our possession a little bit better, but I am really proud of our guys and their work rate."
Cumings scored his third goal of the season off a cross from Stephen Roberson from six yards out with just 2:58 ticked off the clock to give TU an early lead. Cristian extended the Hurricane lead to two goals as he punched in his 11th goal of the season off a pass from Omar Mata in the 30th minute.
Kofi Gyawu got one back for the Blazers as he netted a goal in the 76th minute, but Tulsa held on to the one-goal advantage for the win.
Akeil Barrett came in off the bench and tallied a team-best three shots, while Cumings had two attempts and five others had one shot. Pais logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up two saves.
UAB had a 17-10 lead in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 10-3 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 21st against UCF. Game time is set for 11:30 am at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
