Tulsa Drillers General Manager Mike Melega was given high-praise this week, earning the Bill Valentine Texas League Executive of the Year Award.
Melega oversaw the Drillers' successful run through the regular season and into the playoffs. Tulsa finished the season 75-64 and drew 372,624 fans to ONEOK Field this season. That attendance total is the second-highest for a professional baseball team in the city of Tulsa, dating back to 1905.
Tulsa also hosted the Texas League All-Star Game in 2011 which drew a sellout crowd.
Melega says he is proud to earn the award, but it's not just about him.
"It is an honor to receive this award from the Texas League," said Melega. "It is actually an honor for our entire organization. We have an outstanding staff, and everyone has put so much effort into ensuring that we had a successful season. Our fans are some of the best in Minor League Baseball, and without their support, we would not be in a position to receive recognition such as this award."
