Langston University's newest president officially has been introduced to Tulsa.

Dr. Kent Smith Jr. and his family visited Metropolitan Baptist Church on Sunday. He outlined his vision for the university at a reception at Gilcrease Museum.

He said one of his long-term goals is to launch a national research campaign, to rebrand the university and to help it grow.

Smith has worked at universities in Alabama, Colorado and Ohio.

"I've never felt a place that has been as warm and as welcoming as Oklahoma," Smith said. "It's a spirit here. Whether someone is associated with Langston or not, my wife and my sons and I feel very, very welcome."

Tulsa is home to one of the three Langston University campuses.
