The Westside YMCA is looking for volunteers to help build a new playground in Tulsa. At least 200 volunteers are needed to make the playground a reality.

The project will be underway from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9 at the Westside Y, 5400 South Olympia Avenue.

It's a collaborative effort that brings KaBOOM! playground experts to town to help with construction.

KaBOOM! philanthropic organization is dedicated helping a generation that plays outdoors less than any other generation, according to their web site. Their goal is to bring playgrounds within walking distance of every child in America.

According to KaBOOM!, the "play deficit":

  • Contributes to childhood obesity
  • Decreases creativity, imagination and team work
  • Increases chances for poor social skills – including a greater likelihood of felony arrests by young adulthood

Breakfast, lunch and water will be provided to volunteers. Come dressed for the weather – rain or shine – and wear comfortable, close-toed shoes, sneakers or work boots you don't mind getting dirty.

Tools and gloves will also be provided for appropriate projects.

They ask that volunteers plan to carpool on build day as parking is limited.

The playground is a collaborative effort between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, KaBOOM!, Flintco and the Westside Y.
