OHP: DUI A Factor In Crash That Killed Idabel Teenage Girl

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a crash that killed a 16-year-old girl in Broken Bow early Sunday morning. Authorities say DUI was a factor in the collision.

It happened at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, on U.S. Highway 259, about one mile north of Joe Hough Road in Broken Bow.

According to the OHP collision report, the 2002 Dodge pickup was southbound on U.S. 259. The driver, 18-year-old William Zack Roy McReynolds, fell asleep when the truck ran off the roadway to the left, striking the Yanubbee Creek Guardrail.

The Dodge went airborne and fell about 30 feet into a creek bed. One passenger in the car, 16-year-old Sarah Ann Cofer of Idabel, Oklahoma, was thrown about 10 feet from the vehicle.

The pickup then fell on top of her.

Cofer was pinned against the ground before being freed by Steel's Wrecker Service. She was pronounced dead at the scene from massive head and internal injuries.

McReynolds was transported to McCurtain Memorial Hospital with head and trunk internal injuries. He was listed in stable condition.

A second passenger in the truck, 18-year-old Crandle Talley, was transported to the same hospital with arm and head injuries. He is in stable condition. A 15-year-old female passenger was taken to the hospital in stable condition with head injuries.

Neither Cofer nor McReynolds was wearing a seatbelt, but Talley was wearing one at the time of the wreck.

Troopers have listed the cause of the collision as "DUI." They say they smelled an odor of alcohol beverage on McReynolds.
