The University of Tulsa men's and women's tennis teams learned their opening round matchups for this year's NCAA tennis tournament Tuesday.
The No. 25-ranked women's tennis squad will face No. 46 Stephen F. Austin Friday, May 11 in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis First Round. The women will compete in the Baylor Regional held in Waco, Texas.
"We're extremely excited to be back in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth-straight year," said Tulsa Head Coach Dean Orford. "It's another tough draw for us with Stephen F. Austin. They are an up-and-coming program and I know the coach very well. They have done some great things this year so it will be a tough first round matchup. We've gone down to Waco numerous times, so the environment will be nothing new to us."
On the same day, the No. 20 ranked men's team will face No. 36 Minnesota in the opening round of play. They are competing in the Oklahoma Regional which will be held in Norman.
"It's fortunate that we get to go down to Norman because we always play well down there," Tulsa Head Coach Vince Westbrook said. "I thought our ranking would go up a little higher and we would get to host, so I'm a little disappointed about that. But I'm excited about the chance to face Minnesota. They are a very good team and I'm expecting a very tough match."
The TU men sit at 18-8 on the season while Minnesota is 13-7 entering tournament play.
The men's team won the 2012Conference-USA Championship last week with a win over Memphis. The win was the sixth conference title for the TU men's team.
The women on the other hand captured their third-straight Conference USA Championship last week with a 4-2 win over No. 40 Rice. It was the fifth title in the last five years for the women's squad.
