A Tulsa police officer shot and killed a man during a suicide call near 61st and Lewis in South Tulsa Tuesday evening.
It happened around 8:15 p.m. at the London Square apartment complex.
Police say the 45-year-old man, who was evicted from the complex weeks ago, was threatening suicide. Apartment management was allowing the man to stay at the complex after the eviction.
COPES, a mental health outreach, was called to the man's apartment for an evaluation with Tulsa Police officers standing by until COPES arrived.
Police say the man was calm at first but quickly became agitated and wanted to leave. The man then suddenly pulled out a knife near an officer. Police say the officer reacted quickly and shot the man at least one time.
Stephanie Thomas told News On 6 she was on the phone with the man just minutes before the incident. "I'm like tense. I just hear his voice in my head, a scratchy little voice. He was just like, ‘come here,'" said Thomas.
EMSA transported the man to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.
Tulsa Police have not yet released the man's name or that of the officer. They said the man had a history of being unstable.
