The map on the right shows the statewide rainfall totals from this most recent event courtesy of the OK Mesonet. As expected, the rains have been excessive in many instances for the more eastern counties whereas the more drought stricken western counties received the least. There is still a chance for additional showers and storms over the next two days for the western counties which will help their drought situation; but there is also a chance for showers and storms for the E side of the state which is really not needed.
The slow moving storm system aloft is the culprit in all this and it will be gradually wobbling around over the next few days as it slowly moves to the NE. That will take it directly over the state and eventually on east of us in time for the weekend. In the meantime, the cold pocket of air aloft and the circulation associated with the storm system will keep us cloudy and produce periods of light rain, drizzle, and showers. As the colder air aloft comes more directly overhead, then some storms will also be possible and some of those will be locally quite intense with hail and brief periods of heavy rainfall a concern. That will most likely be on Thursday.
The colder air aloft and the cloudy skies will also maintain a short thermometer with overnight temperatures generally in the 50s and daytime highs in the upper 50s or perhaps lower 60s if we get lucky and see a few breaks in the clouds. Our winds will be generally on the light side and primarily from an E to SE direction.
A few showers or storms may linger into Friday on the backside of the system, but by the weekend the system is expected to be far enough east of us to allow things to start drying out. In fact, the weekend is looking very promising right now with mostly sunny skies and daytime temperatures warming back into the 70s.
As always, stay tuned and check back for updates.
