The poor economy along with high feed prices isn't a good combination for some livestock owners right now. Some are struggling to care for their animals.
But there's a new place where Oklahoma's Own can turn for help.
With lots of wrong in the world, it's nice to know there are people like Jennifer Murray and her husband Reginald, and places like their Mended Fences ranch.
The livestock rescue East of Catoosa takes in animals when owners can't care for them anymore, or when they're neglected or abandoned.
Their most recent rescues are a horse and two llamas, whose owners didn't have anywhere else to turn
"They didn't have the space. They had to move closer to town to find work to support themselves," said Reginald Murray.
There are a number of horse rescue organizations across the state of Oklahoma. But not nearly as many that take other livestock. That's where Mended Fences hopes to make a difference.
Mended fences is kind of an extension of the Murray's business where they remove and relocate pesky animals.
Last August, Catoosa police asked if they could take in Gus, a horse found wandering and in terrible shape.
"It was horrible. You could see every rib," said Jennifer Murray.
Gus' weight was half of what it should have been.
"Now he's just in fabulous shape. He's fat and happy," she said.
That success prompted the Murrays' to form a livestock rescue to help other animals.
"I've got to love them. Because anything less than loving the animal, that's not right for the animal," said Reginald Murray.
Mended Fences is a young non-profit--and small now--but often wonderful things can happen when they start with love, affection and a desire to make a difference.
"These animals need love, they need affection, and they need treats. They need a good home," Jennifer said.
Mended Fences also just placed four hens, four roosters, a guinea, a turkey and seven ducks.
