The City of Tulsa will have trained volunteers beginning this month, who will look out for motorists who abuse disabled parking spaces.
Tulsa officials say the Voluntary Disabled Parking Program will be administered by the City's Human Rights Department, which also is responsible for ensuring that the provisions of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) are complied with in Tulsa.
"It is important that all citizens are concerned about protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities and illnesses," said Dr. Lana Turner-Addison, Human Rights Director.
Turner-Addison say the volunteers will not issue citations, but will report vehicles parked illegally to Tulsa Police, who will then dispatch an officer to issue a citation.
The trained volunteers will also be looking for both public and private facilities that are not in compliance with ADA requirements and report those situations to the Human Rights Department for further investigation or action.
Volunteers are being trained this week.
