We are now almost a week into the New Year, and so far temperatures are running nearly 8 degrees above normal. And even though a cool front has pushed through the state as of early this morning, we will still be above normal during the day today. Look for lots of sunshine today, brisk northerly winds of 10-15 mph and gusty at times along with afternoon temperatures well into the 50s.
It will be cooler on Sunday with a NE wind, mostly cloudy skies, and afternoon temperatures in the upper 40s. However, we will start the day with morning lows well above freezing so although we will be cooler, Sunday will also average warmer than normal.
Monday will also be mostly cloudy with a NE wind and temperatures which will average above normal with morning lows in the 30s and daytime highs well into the 40s. Sunday night and into the day Monday may also see some light rain developing for the extreme S and SE counties of the state.
A better chance of rain is expected on Tuesday when the chances will be on the order of 50% or more across all of Eastern Oklahoma. It will be rain as temperatures will be well above freezing in the morning hours and in the 40s for the afternoon hours. So, it will be a cold rain, but rain nonetheless,.
A stronger cold front will be arriving during the day Wednesday with gusty northerly winds and temperatures which will likely max out before the front arrives and then falling for later in the day. That will put temperatures at or below normal for a change for Thursday and Friday. This looks to be a dry system however.
A moderating trend should then follow going into the weekend before another cold front arrives by early that following week. These cold air intrusions this week and next will be relatively brief as the pattern so far does not support an outbreak of the really cold air making it this far south. It is bound to happen sooner or later, but all indications right now make later appear to be the better choice.
So, stay tuned and check back for updates.
