Thieves Can't Steal Tulsa Man's Christmas Spirit

The spirit of Christmas shines bright, even when burglars try to steal it.

A 25-year-old Tulsa man recently bought his first house and had just lived there a month when thieves kicked in his front door and loaded their car with his belongings. But instead of getting mad or being consumed with hate, he wrote them a letter.

David was raised to work hard, save and earn what you have and he did that to buy his first home. He wasn't even completely unpacked, when last Wednesday he had unwelcome house guests.

"Walked to the door, and it was open. It had been kicked in, and your heart just drops," David said.

He'd come home on his lunch hour to meet some plumbers and discovered the break-in. The thieves took his TVs, games, movies and all his Christmas presents.

Feeling unsafe and unable to sleep, David sat down and began to write: "Dear Intruders," he begins. "Even though what you've done is repulsive, I can't hold a grudge."

He tells them while those possessions were a symbol of all he'd accomplished, the truth is, those things that have the most value for him can never be stolen.

"I have family and friends, everything I really need. It would be a disservice to them to stop trusting everybody. There are a lot more good people than there are bad," he said.

David knows many people are going through much worse and says his life is filled with what truly matters. During this Christmas season, he chooses to be grateful, above all else.

"My friends and family couldn't care less if I couldn't give them anything, but it means a lot to all of us; we make the effort to be thankful," David said.

He tells the thieves, "While your car may have been full when you left my home, I wish you knew how empty it really was." He says, "Christmas is still coming and I'll celebrate it as I always have. Thankful for what has been given to me."

David says his faith in humanity was restored right after the break-in. The plumbers he was meeting that day fixed the problem and left without charging him a dime. They later called the next day and said they'd found someone to fix his door.
