The Cherokee Nation gathered to celebrate their new Chief elect Sunday.

The official inauguration for Chief Bill John Baker was Sunday afternoon in Tahlequah. It took months of controversy, two elections, and multiple recounts before Baker could take office.

But the chief said he's excited for his new role with the tribe.

"We will always work together for all Cherokees", Chief Baker said.

Bill John Baker defeated former Chief, Chad Smith, by taking nearly 54 percent of the vote in a special election held last month.
