TULSA, Oklahoma -- Some University of Tulsa mechanical engineering design students fulfilled quite a challenge Wednesday.

Their goal:  design and build a gizmo that is safe and lightweight and will sling a horseshoe 20 feet.

Students tested their designs in a mechanical horseshoe-pitching contest on campus.

Each contestant got five throws at a metal stake, which were judged on accuracy and time.

The task was made even more difficult by rules that required the thrower to weigh less than 20 pounds and be built for less than $50.
