TULSA, Oklahoma -- A driver who fell asleep behind the wheel ran his car off Interstate 44 onto an entrance ramp below just before 8 a.m. Saturday.

Officers at the scene said a 21-year-old male who works an overnight shift was westbound on I-44 on his way home. Near the 41st Street exit, he fell asleep, and his vehicle went down a large embankment, through a ditch and onto the on-ramp.

The vehicle traveled 290 feet and rolled before coming to a stop, according to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper.

The driver was wearing his seat belt, and emergency workers said he appeared to be uninjured. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Officers said excessive speed did not appear to be involved.
