TULSA, Oklahoma -- Tulsa Red Cross volunteers were on their way to the east coast even before Hurricane Irene made landfall Saturday evening.

The Red Cross will help prepare shelters for evacuees along the coast.

The volunteers will drive through neighborhoods affected by the storm, to distribute cleaning supplies and food.

The volunteers left early to be able to deliver aid as quickly as possible after the storm passed.

Teams are fanning out across the eastern seaboard from North Carolina where damage has already been reported to as far north as New York City.

The teams are expected to return in four weeks.
