JONES, Oklahoma – Jones’ Jeff Stursa settled down after the first inning and pitched a gem for the Longhorns in a 9-2 win over Hennessey in the opening round of the Jones Kiwanis Invitational Tournament.
Stursa allowed a two-out double in the top of the first inning. The Eagles turned the two-out double into two runs.
Jones returned the favor in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler McCulley’s two-out double drove in a run, then later in the inning McCulley scored from third to tie the game at 2-2.
Stursa’s pitching got stronger as the game went on. The Senior tossed two strikeouts in the second and third inning, and finished with 10 strikeouts.
Stursa’s bat helped Jones take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning, as his two-run double gave Jones a 5-2 advantage.
Jones’ Blake Estep supplied the biggest hit in the game. Estep connected on a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish off the scoring.
