OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Corn Bible Academy Lady Crusaders held off a furious comeback attempt by Timberlake Thursday to top the Tigers 42-36 in the Class B quarterfinals.
The Lady Crusaders (19-8) held a five-point lead to start the second quarter, but turnovers left the door open for a second quarter comeback from Timberlake (20-7). The Lady Tigers strung together a 10-3 run capped off by a Kylee Severin three ball to take a 19-17 advantage late in the quarter.
With just two seconds left on the clock, center Jessica Penner knocked down a jumper from the elbow to tie game 19-19 heading into the locker room.
The teams traded baskets in for most of the third quarter, but back-to-back baskets from Penner and Taylor Smith gave the Lady Crusaders a 29-26 advantage in the closing moments of the third quarter.
Severin continued to answer for the Lady Tigers and hit a jumper as time expired to close the deficit to one point to head into the closing quarter.
Trailing by three early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers scored back-to-back buckets – including a put-back layup from Bailee Clift – to take a 34-33 advantage as the game wound down.
However, the Lady Crusaders got the job done from the free throw line, hitting four free throws in addition to a jumper from Emily Dick to close the came out.
CBA now advances to the semifinals to take on the winner of Balko and Red Oak at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
