HENRYETTA, Oklahoma -- The town of Henryetta continues to mourn the loss of seventh grader Landon Jewell, who died after being shot last week.

When a community is suffering from a shock or tragedy, sports can provide a welcome outlet, even if it’s only temporary relief.

The first home basketball games since his passing were a pair of tough-played Homecoming contests, the Knights lost to Haskell 55-49 in the final minute, and the Lady Knights effortlessly crushed the Lady Haymakers 69-40 Friday night.

From the opening tipoff of the girls game, there was no contest. Henryetta scored the first 11 points, and they led 17-6 through 8 minutes. A technical foul call didn’t help Haskell, Henryetta had a 35-16 lead at halftime.

The Lady Knights’ bench outscored their starters 17-3 during the third quarter, the lead increased to 54-28. The final score wound up being 69-40, Henryetta on top. 10 of the Lady Knights’ 14 players scored, senior Heather Konsure led the offense with 14 points, junior Ashton Peters 12, sophomores Lauren Flanary and Miranda Harjo added nine each, junior Bobbie McCullar had eight points.

While practices continue during Christmas break, the next game action for Henryetta will be January 3-8 for the boys(2-4) at the Okemah Tournament, and January 6-8 in McAlester at the Tournament of Champions for the girls(5-1). Regular season games resume January 11 versus Eufaula, and January 14 versus Morris.
