TULSA, Oklahoma – Despite a slow start for the second week in a row, the Booker T. Washington Hornets shut out the Deer Creek Antlers 23-0 on Friday night.
Both teams would alternate quarterbacks throughout the first half, with Jordy Albert and Dominque Sells both playing for Booker T., and Alex Christensen and Joel Blumenthal sharing duties for the Antlers. Neither team would get close to the endzone in the opening frame, with Deer Creek barely missing a 60-yard field goal attempt and Jordy Albert getting picked off by Deer Creek’s Eric Mahoney.
The Hornets would do most of their damage in the second quarter. Finishing a drive that was started in the 1st quarter, Isaac Bennett had an impressive 48-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0. Booker T. would miss a field goal later in the quarter, but the Hornets’ final drive of the half was a defining moment in the game.
Facing a 3rd-and-25, Albert picked up 21 yards on the ground to bring up a 4th-and-4, which the Hornets converted. The drive would end with an 18-yard pass play from Albert to Dante Barnett to make it 14-0. That was the score at halftime, and Booker T. added nine points in the second half to seal the victory.
Deer Creek finishes the season with an 8-4 record. Booker T. Washington improves to 11-1, and will face Guthrie in state semifinals.
