MOORE, Oklahoma – The Norman Tigers had to hold off a late comeback, but were able to beat Southmoore 34-28 Friday to stay undefeated.
Southmoore (4-2, 1-2) took an early 14-10 lead, but could not hold onto it. The Tigers (6-0, 3-0) scored 14 unanswered points to go into halftime up 24-14.
Norman continued to build on that lead, adding a field goal and touchdown to push the lead to 34-14 and seemingly out of reach. But the Sabercats would not go quietly.
Andrew Long scored a rushing touchdown, and Southmoore recovered the ensuing onside kick to get the ball back. Long followed with another score, quickly cutting the lead to six points. But the Tigers’ defense held from there and sealed the victory.
Norman continues to be one of the biggest surprises in the state and has its best record to start a season since 2006, when the Tigers won their first nine games. That was the last time they finished with a winning record or went to the playoffs.
The Tigers will try to keep that success going next week against Putnam City West (1-5, 1-2), which won its first game in three years Friday. Southmoore will move on to face Broken Arrow (5-1, 3-0).
