TULSA, Oklahoma – The East Central Cardinals cooled off the Coweta Tigers thanks to an Antonio Escobedo 35-yard field goal in the final seconds of the game. It’s the second time this month that the Cardinals have won a game thanks to Escobedo’s late-game heroics.
East Central led 21-14 at halftime but played sluggish in the third quarter. The Tigers got a long punt return from Randall Smith that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Clint Keel.
The two teams went to the final minute tied at 21. Just like he had done in Week 2 against Bartlesville, Escobedo calmly stepped up to the football and banged a clutch field goal right through the middle of the uprights. The senior helped the Cardinals overcome two fourth quarter fumbles.
The Tigers had won three straight games after dropping their season opener to Wagoner. The loss to the Cardinals denied the Tigers their first 4-1 start since they began the year 5-1 in 2007.
East Central (5-1/3-0) has won four of the last five games against Coweta. The Cardinals will travel to play Tulsa Central in Week 6. Coweta (3-3/1-2) will host Grove.
