MOORE, Oklahoma – The Southmoore Sabercats recovered from their first loss of the season with a 51-27 victory over Sapulpa Thursday without starting quarterback Kendal Thompson.
Thompson remained out of the starting lineup thanks to a knee injury, and the teams traded scores throughout the first half.
Sapulpa (2-3, 0-2) took a 19-16 lead with less than two minutes left until halftime, but Southmoore (4-1, 1-1) responded with a touchdown of its own on the last play of the half to retake the lead going into the locker room. The Sabercats never trailed again.
Tre Edwards scored two consecutive touchdowns to extend Southmoore’s lead to 37-19 late in the third quarter. Sapulpa put one more touchdown on the board and converted a two-point conversion to pull within 10 points, but the Chieftains would never get any closer. The Sabercats added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to finish the scoring.
Southmoore will move on to face surprising Norman (5-0) next week, while Sapulpa will play Broken Arrow (3-1).
