OKLAHOMA CITY – Barry Sanders Jr. ran up and down the field at will and led the Heritage Hall Chargers to a 35-16 blowout of the Casady Cyclones Thursday in the annual Polo Bowl.
Heritage Hall held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, and Sanders took over from there. He consistently broke big runs on offense and added an 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to give the Chargers a 28-7 lead.
Casady managed to get past midfield with time winding down in the half, but could not cut into the lead. Sterling Sheppard intercepted a pass and returned it 64 yards for a defensive touchdown, giving Heritage Hall a 35-7 lead at halftime. Sheppard also had a big day, adding a rushing and receiving score to his defensive touchdown. Sheppard and Sanders accounted for all of the Chargers' points.
Sanders suffered cramps as the game wore on and was not utilized as much in the second half. He did not play at all in the fourth quarter, and the Chargers did not add any points after the half. Casady scored a touchdown and field goal in the second half, but never posed much of a threat.
Heritage Hall avenged its dramatic loss to start last season, when Casady won 7-0 in overtime. The Chargers will face the Clinton Red Tornadoes next Friday, while Casady will face the Oklahoma Christian School Saints.
