TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Midwest City Bombers fended off a persistent Putnam City West team to advance to the 6A state title game, 50-47. The Bombers led from start to finish in front of an energized crowd at ORU’s Mabee Center.
Midwest City opened on a 5-0 run to start the game. Trez Colbert showed a hot-hand early on, scoring 11 first-half points.
Amric Fields carried the load on offense for the Patriots. The 6-foot-9 center finished around the rim with little trouble in the first half, but Putnam City West was not able to hit open jumpers outside the paint.
Xavier McClish hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter for Midwest City. Putnam City West cut the Bombers’ lead to 16-13 after a Kendal Dudley buzzer-beater from midcourt.
McClish led the Bombers with 19 points. Fields scored 18 for Putnam City West.
The Patriots had multiple chances to tie the game with free throws in the fourth quarter but couldn’t knock them down.
Midwest City got the ball in McClish’s hands knowing PC West would have to foul. McClish made clutch free throws in the final minutes of the game to seal the win for the Bombers.
Midwest City opened the second half with a pair of Fields baskets to cut the Bombers’ lead to two. Midwest City rebounded to post a 36-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bombers will face defending 6A champion Putnam City Saturday at 8:45 p.m. at ORU’s Mabee Center. The Pirates took down Edmond Santa Fe 48-42 in the semifinals to advance to the title game.
