LAWTON, Oklahoma -- Less than 72 hours after receiving an offer from the Arizona Wildcats, Lawton’s Jabral Johnson gave his verbal commitment to play for the university.
“It’s a big blessing,” Johnson said. “I went there around Christmas and loved it. I loved the weather and the hospitality they showed me was amazing. I can’t explain how well they treated me.”
Johnson received his first and only offer from the Wildcats on Monday. The Wolverines’ linebacker called position coach Tim Kish Wednesday to inform him of his decision to play for the Wildcats. While it may seem to be a rushed decision, Johnson said he was very careful with his choice.
“I took a couple of days to think about it,” Johnson said. “[Arizona] said they were only offering two linebackers for the class of 2011 and I am one of them. It’s a dream to experience something like that. I always wanted to go to the west coast.”
Despite committing so early, the 6-foot-2, 218-pounder plans to remain a Wildcat, even if other schools come calling.
“I’m a man of my word,” Johnson said. “I’ll tell [other schools] that I plan to be a Wildcat.”
Johnson wants to become a forensic chemist and work for a CSI department. Tulsa and Texas Tech were also showing interest in Johnson.
