KINGFISHER, Oklahoma -- Only one school west of I-35 remains in the high school football playoffs. The Kingfisher Yellowjackets (12-2) are back in the 2A title game for the second time in three years.
Jeff Myers’ squad is looking for a happier ending this Saturday afternoon at Boone-Pickens Stadium. The Yellowjackets lost a heartbreaker to Clinton in the 2007 2A championship game. A last-minute touchdown pass by the Red Tornadoes denied the Yellowjackets a second Gold Ball.
Several juniors and seniors on this year’s squad remember watching the Gold Ball slip out of their hands two years ago.
“It’s kind of a bad memory and something they don’t want to repeat again,” Coach Myers said.
Motivation is running high at Kingfisher High School. A simple message on a poster board is taped on a table inside their locker room. It reads “Jackets, the choice is yours!” On the left of the message sits the Silver Ball trophy from 2007 and to the right rests the 2003 Gold Ball.
Kingfisher rolls in the title game with a nine-game winning streak. Lincoln Christian enters Saturday afternoon’s 2A championship game with a 13-1 record. The Bulldogs defeated Pawhuska 47-0 in last weeks' semifinal game.
