TULSA, Oklahoma - Cale Grauer has been a lot of things for Lincoln Christian this season.
“He’s been steady, he’s been consistent, he’s done a great job managing the offense,” said Lincoln Christian coach Darren Melton. “The old adage in football is, ‘you don’t want your quarterback to get you beat’ and he hasn’t.”
The senior signal caller has taken the Bulldogs all the way to state where Lincoln can win its first state title on Saturday.
But Grauer has come a long way. He sat out last season after transferring from Claremore. It was a year of learning and preparation that has paid off.
“I don’t think I could have had the same outcome as we did this year if I didn’t sit out a year and learn the offense. I mean, it’s helped a lot,” Grauer said.
“We knew he’d be good because he’d always pick us apart on our first string defense – he’d be our scout team quarterback,” said senior tailback Matt Lawwill. “We gave him a great look and I think he got better during that season. Even last year he works just as hard as he does now.”
Math is Grauer’s favorite subject in school but he has not crunched the numbers on his successful season. More than 2,500 yards passing and 30 touchdowns ranks him as one of the best quarterbacks in the state.
However, Grauer’s only concerned about one number – that being the number one. That’s the number of victories that Lincoln needs to win the Gold Ball.
“This is what we’ve working for all year,” Grauer said. “We’re just going to have to go out and execute – have a good game. Win ballgames. That’s the one statistic I look at.”
