I had a great time broadcasting OSU and T-U basketball games in Anaheim. You learn a few things about teams when the play 3 games in 4 days against good competition. I learned that both the Cowboys and Golden Hurricane have a little fight to them.
OSU lost a semifinal game to Virginia Tech after leading by 7 points with about 4 minutes to play. Some teams would have mailed that third game of the tournament in, but the Cowboys responded with perhaps their best half of the season in the second half against Murray State (a team that will make the NCAA tournament). OSU cruised to a relatively easy win over the Racers as it turned out.
The Cowboys have struggled to score. When Keiton Page hasn’t hit shots offense has been a chore. Marshall Moses has been, by far, their most consistent offensive player. But if the shots aren’t falling from the outside he faces constant double and triple teams.
The best news about the Cowboys is the defense that they’ve played. They have held every opponent below 50 percent shooting and 5 of 6 opponents below 60 points. There are definite reasons why Fred Gulley is the starter at point guard. Not the least of which is that he is a defensive tone setter. Gulley has the size, strength and, most of all desire, to stop opposing guards. If the Cowboys can keep up the defense, you have to figure the offense will come around.
On the T-U side, I really like their freshman point guard Jordan Clarkson. Look out for this guy. He has replaced a four-year starter who is now in the NBA in Ben Uzoh and T-U hasn’t missed a step. Clarkson has already been Conference USA freshman of the week twice and the best is yet to come. Bear in mind that he was a 2-guard in high school and is learning how to play the point. We should all learn so quickly.
Don’t miss the Cowboys and Golden Hurricane December 8th at the BOK Center.

May 26th, 2011
