Cowboy fans probably won’t believe it until they see it, but this is the year the Texas disappointment ends.

They’ve seen the past disasters: 2003 when a 2-point halftime lead turned into a 55-16 loss, 2004 when the Longhorns scored 49-straight points to win 56 to 35, 2007 when a 21-point fourth-quarter lead turned into a loss.

Why would you expect any different this time around in Austin?

Because this is a different Texas team. This Longhorns group is just a minor miracle win over Nebraska away from riding a 6-game losing streak into Saturday.

Let’s remember that Nebraska dropped 4 likely touchdown passes in a 20-13 loss to Texas. They caught those passes against OSU.

You wouldn’t have said this if you looked on paper at the beginning of the season, but the Cowboys will have at least the three best offensive playmakers on the field Saturday.

Kendall Hunter, Justin Blackmon and Brandon Weeden are all better than anyone the Longhorns are throwing out there on offense this season.

And lest you think these Cowboys will be intimidated by 100-thousand fans inside DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium, remember Hunter had 161 yards rushing the last time he played there in 2008.

It’s not a gimme, but this year’s game is much closer to a 6-inch putt to win the Greater Greensboro Open than a 40-foot must-make double breaker to win the last spot at qualifying school.

This time around it’s not just about what the firepower the Cowboys have, it’s about the firepower the Longhorns don’t.
May 26th, 2011
