There’s way too much bad history for even the most hyper-positive OSU fan to think that things will be easy for the Cowboys in Austin on Saturday. I mean, think about it- I just typed the words easy-for-the-Cowboys-in-Austin. Sure, OSU is about a touchdown favorite, but as former Pokes boss Pat Jones likes to say...”It isn’t like they’ve given up football in the 40 acres.”
Texas has talent, but at the moment no consistent playmakers. Too many mistakes from QB Garrett Gilbert, too many forced throws and indecision. But, if, and that’s a BIG if, Gilbert settles himself for one night and his receivers don’t drop as many passes then it could be a very tough go for OSU.
Here’s the other reason for either concern or skepticism- OSU scored on Nebraska’s vaunted defense, but Texas may be even better on that side of the ball.
Put a premium on this: Withstand an angry initial effort, string together a couple of big plays that produce points, and for goodness sakes keep the foot on the accelerator.
Everyone knows what’s happened when the Cowboys have let up in this series after building big leads. Texas deserves credit for “turning it on” in those games too, but to paraphrase Rick Pitino...Vince Young isn’t walking through that door, Colt McCoy isn’t walking through that door...
I’m convinced the Cowboy defense will have to lead the way, and in that instance, they better have that door locked. Tightly.
May 26th, 2011
