Funny how college football is. Last season Oklahoma State was on the cover of the Sports Illustrated college football edition. They had Dez Bryant, Kendall Hunter, Russell Okung and the SI cover boy himself, Zac Robinson coming back. But Dez ran into Deion, Kendall ran into the Houston defense, Zac ran into a concussion in the Tech game and the greatest year in OSU football history didn’t materialize.
Until this year. The Sooners have run into more problems on the road than Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise in the Cannonball Run. The Longhorns are playing like John Mackovic is coaching them and OSU has the inside track to win the Big 12 South.
The Cowboys have already won in Lubbock for the first time since 1944 and in Manhattan for the first time since 1988. Now they head to Austin, where they haven’t won since 1944, as a 6 and a half point favorite. A team with only 9 returning starters that was picked 5th or 6th in the Big 12 South now has a one-game lead in the division.
The Sooners and Longhorns are down this year, but if the Cowboys win the Big 12 South nobody will talk about that ten years from now. You don’t get many chances like OSU has right now and there’s probably some inherent pressure in that. But the Cowboys have so many young guys and players who haven’t been through anything like this that they may be oblivious to what could be in front of them. I think that’s a good thing.
The worst thing they can do now is start looking at the standings and reading what we in the media are saying. The best thing they can do is what they’ve been doing since practice began in Julyplay like they want to prove everyone wrong.

May 26th, 2011
