It’s the part of the game that’s sometimes difficult to predict and many times overlooked by fans, but always seems to play a huge part in big games. It’s special teams and it was a huge determining factor in some of the biggest games on Saturday and it killed both the Sooners and Cowboys.
OSU/Nebraska: The Cowboys gave up a kick return for touchdown (3rd one they’ve given this year) and a fake punt for a first down on a drive that eventually ended with a Huskers’ touchdown.
OU/Missouri: The Sooners gave up a kick return for touchdown on the opening kickoff. And with the Sooners trailing 17 to 14 early in the 3rd quarter, Jimmy Stevens missed a chip-shot 30-yard field goal that would’ve tied the game.
Michigan State/Northwestern: With the unbeaten Spartans trailing 24 to 14 and facing 4th and 11 at the Northwestern 36-yard line early in the 4th quarter, Michigan State executed a perfect fake punt that netted a first down. The Spartans would score on the next play and go on to win 35 to 27.
Wisconsin/Iowa: Following the Hawkeyes’ first touchdown of the game, Adam Robinson missed a point after touchdown. You know, one of those where you turn to the guy next to you and say, “boy I hope that doesn’t come back to haunt us.” Rarely does it, but guess what.Wisconsin 31 Iowa 30 Final.

May 26th, 2011
