College Football Survivor. Who needs reality TV? We’ve got the Big 12 South
All week long we heard Taylor Martinez’ critics say he couldn’t throw the ball out of his own shadow. He was pulled from the Texas loss. All OSU has to do is stop the run and they can winwe heard. Martinez’ throwing motion will never be confused with that of John Elway, but on Saturday he quieted the critics and looked more like Vince Young than a freshman flash in the pan.
Niles Paul dropped 4 passes in the Huskers’ loss at Texas. Several could’ve gone for touchdowns. That would have changed the entire game in Austin. On Saturday Paul returned a kick for touchdown and caught 9 passes for 131 yards.
OSU’s offense is predicated on putting constant pressure on the defense and forcing the opposing offense to keep scoring in order to keep up. All afternoon on Saturday you had the exact opposite feeling with OSU’s offense having to keep up Nebraska’s Martinez-led suddenly juggernaut show. And the Cowboy offense failed. It’s hard to say that when Kendall Hunter had over 200 yards and Brandon Weeden to Justin Blackmon produced 157 yards and 2 scores, but the offense bears much of the blame for OSU’s loss and they took responsibility after the game.
The Cowboys couldn’t get key third-down conversions in the second half and that allowed Nebraska’s offense to get back out onto the field and put pressure on a reeling Cowboys defense. OSU was just 3 of 13 on 3rd down conversions and 2 of 7 in the second half when they needed them most.
Don’t get me wrong 6-0 was unexpected, but that doesn’t mean that 6-1 doesn’t hurt.
Who can figure out the Big 12 South? Your leader after Saturday. The Baylor Bears. Just another week in the hottest reality show to hit television.
May 26th, 2011
