I can remember most of the games I sat on the bench and watched up close at OBU. I had seen the old films, heard the stories about the Al Tucker days, the 1966 title team.
Tonight, the Bison had a chance to build new memories. Just like 44 years ago, success would come mainly on the inside. But the game-winning basket was courtesy of AJ Hawkins, a three-pointer that capped a four-point trip down the floor in the final minute. Hawkins had missed the second of two free throws after making the first, then cashed in after an offensive rebound.
The Bison rallied from double-digit deficits 3 times in the five games, and Tuesday night in Kansas City it was nothing but close with Azusa Pacific the entire night.
In the end, while head coach Doug Tolin would probably not agree, it was somewhat fitting that when Azusa flipped in a desperation shot, it took a video review to make sure it DIDNT beat the buzzer.
After 44 years, whats a few more seconds?
