STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State softball team mustered only three hits, but that was all it needed to beat rival Oklahoma 2-1 Wednesday in Bedlam.
The Cowgirls (37-11, 8-4) recorded their first two in the second inning, and they were the only ones that mattered. Julie Ward got on base with a single, and Tamara Brown followed with a two-run home run. That turned out to be the game winner.
The Sooners (34-15, 7-7) threatened to score in almost every inning, but never seemed able to cash in. Their biggest threat came in the third, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs. But Brittany Williams flew out to end the frame with OU still down.
OU got on the board in the fifth thanks to a solo home run by Haley Nix, which cut the lead in half. The Sooners managed to get a runner to second in the seventh inning, but Sarah Odom stepped up and struck out Nix to end the game.
Odom earned a save after giving up just one hit in 2.2 innings of work. Kat Espinosa started the night for OSU and allowed only one run on four hits.
Keilani Ricketts turned in a strong performance for OU, allowing only three hits in a complete game while striking out 13. But her one mistake came back to haunt her and she finished with a loss.
Both teams will now move on to two-game series this weekend. Oklahoma State will face Missouri, and Oklahoma will face Texas.
