CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The Corpus Christi Hooks grabbed a series win Saturday with the help of pitcher Dallas Keuchel in an 8-1 win over Tulsa in the Drillers’ first road series of the season.
Keuchel (1-0) picked up his first win of the season thanks to a four hit, eight inning outing, striking out five Drillers’ (4-5) batters. Rob Scahill (0-1) received his first loss of the season, giving up three hits and four earned runs, while walking five batters in his five innings of service.
Corpus Christi (3-6) struck first in the home half of the first inning via a line-drive single to right field by Bronson Sardinha to bring Jimmy Paredes home from third. Two innings later, J.D. Martinez homered to center field with two on base to give The Hooks a 4-0 advantage.
The Drillers tacked on one more in the bottom of the seventh with a Wladamir Sutil double to left field to take a 5-0 advantage.
Tulsa’s lone run of the game came via small ball in the top of the eighth inning. After back-to-back singles to start the inning moved Scott Beerer to second, he came home on a sacrifice double-play to cut the deficit back to four runs.
Corpus Christi added three more runs in the next half-inning to put the game out of reach.
The Drillers will try to remedy their back-to-back losses to San Antonio as they make their first trip of 2011 to Wolf Municipal Stadium in San Antonio Sunday.
