TULSA, Oklahoma -- The game truly lived up to its name Friday, as the Oklahoma State Cowboys topped Oklahoma 7-6 thanks to a Dane Phillips walkoff home run to claim the first game of the weekend series.
After giving up a two-run lead in the sixth inning, the game remained deadlocked until the first at-bat of the ninth inning. Phillips turned on the first pitch he saw and sent it over the center field wall to top rival Oklahoma (25-9, 6-6).
That home run gave Oklahoma reliever Bobby Shore (3-2) the loss for the Sooners, giving up just one earned run in his 3.1 innings of service.
Oklahoma State (26-8, 9-4) starter Mike Strong pitched three scoreless innings to start the game, but his hot start became immaterial after giving up five earned runs in the fourth and fifth to come away with a no-decision. Chris Marlowe (3-2) received the win, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in his 3.2 innings pitched.
In a bit of symmetry, Phillips also accounted for the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. After a two-out walk, he advanced to third on a Zack Johnson single to left field and came home thanks to a Jared Womack single to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Sooners responded in the next half inning. Tyler Ogle scored from first on a Ricky Eisenberg double to left center to tie the game. Casey Johnson gave Oklahoma the lead in the next at-bat with an RBI single to right field to bring Eisenberg home.
Oklahoma added three more in the fifth, but the Cowboys’ offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth with a six-run inning to retake the lead 7-5.
The Bedlam Series will continue at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, but will shift from ONEOK field in Tulsa, Okla. to Bricktown Ball Park in Oklahoma City.
