TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa softball team had a huge first inning and that was all it needed in an 8-1 blowout of Marshall Sunday.
The Golden Hurricane (17-7, 3-0) recorded eight hits in the first inning, including a streak of six consecutive singles. TU batted around in the inning, drove home six runs to immediately take a huge lead and coasted from there.
Tulsa had only three more hits the rest of the way, but scored two runs in the sixth thanks to a walk and an error to finish the scoring. The only run of the game for Marshall (10-13, 0-3) came on a solo home run in the second inning.
Lacey Middlebrooks started the game on the mound for TU, but was pulled after giving up four hits – including the home run – in the first two innings. Aimee Creger took over after that and gave up just one hit in five innings.
The victory gave Tulsa a three-game sweep to begin conference play. The Hurricane will remain at home to host two games Tuesday; first at 1 p.m. against Northern Iowa, and then at 5 p.m. against Indiana.
