TUCSON, Arizona -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys notched their first win of the Dairy Queen Classic Saturday with a 13-1 win over South Alabama.
Oklahoma State (7-3) pitcher Andrew Heaney (3-0) kept the Jaguars’ offense in check for nearly all of the game, allowing just one earned run and struck out five in his 8 1/3 innings pitched. Brad Hook (0-1) was credited with the loss for South Alabama after giving up three earned runs in his 6 1/3 innings of service.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth with two on and two out, Oklahoma State’s Hunter Bailey doubled down the left field line to bring Luis Uribe home from second and tie the game.
The Cowboys lit up the scoreboard in the seventh inning, scoring six runs to take a big, late-game lead. With Uribe on second, Randy McCurry singled to left field to bring him home and take a 2-1 lead. Two at-bats later, Dane Phillips singled to short stop to score McCurry and take a two-run lead.
Back-to-back two-RBI at-bats from Zach Johnson and Gabe Weidenaar pushed the OSU advantage to 7-1.
The Cowboys tacked on another six runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Oklahoma State will close out the Dairy Queen Classic at 1:30 p.m. Sunday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
