SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 2 Oklahoma baseball team continued its torrid pace Friday with a 7-1 win over San Diego in its host tournament.
The Sooners (12-0) only scored in two innings, but that was all they needed. They began the scoring in the top of the third inning with an RBI double from Tyler Ogle. Ogle later scored on a single by Evan Mistich to make it 2-0.
In the next at-bat, Mistich and Cody Reine pulled off a successful double steal, Mistch of second and Reine of home for OU’s third run of the inning. Mistich scored an unearned run on a single by Jack Mayfield to put the Sooners up 4-0.
The score stayed the same until the eighth inning, when OU added three more runs. Garrett Buechele drove two of them home with a bases-loaded single, and Reine added an RBI in the next at-bat.
San Diego finally had a string of back-to-back hits in the bottom of the ninth, capped by an RBI single by Danny Hawksley to avoid a shutout. But Bobby Shore induced a ground ball in the next at-bat to finish a complete game.
Shore gave up a total of eight hits in his nine innings of work, giving up one earned run and striking out four. Calvin Drummond was credited with the loss for San Diego after allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five innings.
The Sooners have been on fire to start the season and have won all but three of their games by four or more runs. Their dominance jumped them from No. 5 to No.2 in the nation this week, and they are just three points behind Florida for the top spot.
OU will stay in San Diego for two more games as part of the USD Tournament and next will play California at 3 p.m. Saturday.
